Hiring a 4WD for Fraser Island
It's one of Australia's most iconic 4WD adventure locations, however specific rules relating to hire vehicles on Fraser can make it a bit of a challenge.

So here's our guide, aimed at helping you have the best Fraser Island 4WD adventure possible!

IMPORTANT: You must obtain our permission before taking our 4WD to any island, including Fraser Island.
Nothing to be carried on the roof of a rental vehicle (including Roof Top Tents)
This is a law made by the Queensland Government and it only applies to rental vehicles.
Due to a number of serious accidents involving rental vehicles, the Queensland Government introduced a law banning hire vehicles from carrying anything on the roof on Fraser Island, including roof top tents. The intent was to minimize the possibility of a vehicle rollover, where the driver is likely to have minimal beach driving experience. Note that this law does not apply to privately owned vehicles. So what are my options?
We offer the following options for you to visit Fraser Island:

Book a vehicle that is not affected by the laws (Landcruiser Troopy, or Hilux Adventure or Outback PLUS).

We remove the roof top tents and supply ground tents for your time on Fraser Island.

We can swap you into one of our other vehicles for your time at Fraser Island (subject to availability).

These options will depend on the vehicle you originally book, how long you are hiring for and your pick-up and return depots. Please see below.

Toyota Landcruiser Troopy
Our Toyota Landcruiser campers comply with the law and can travel to Fraser without any modifications.

Toyota Landcruiser Dual Cab
Unfortunately Landcruiser Dual Cab does not comply with the regulations and is not permitted to travel to Fraser Island. If you book Landcruiser Dual Cab and Fraser Island forms part of your longer itinerary, we can arrange to swap you into an alternative vehicle for your time at Fraser (subject to availability) and then swap you back into the Landcruiser for the duration of your trip if you are continuing on. (For example, we would swap you into a Hilux Adventure with ground tents). All vehicle swaps are performed at Brisbane Airport.
Hilux Outback PLUS
Our Hilux Outback PLUS Campers comply with the law and can travel to Fraser without any modifications.

Hilux Adventure
We offer a couple of options with Hilux Adventure.

Pick-ups from the Gold Coast or Brisbane: We will supply this vehicle with the roof top tents removed and provide you with quality ground tents instead. This is popular if Fraser is your main destination.

Pick-ups from any other location, One-Way or Long rentals: we can arrange to swap you into a suitable vehicle or one without roof top tents for your time at Fraser Island. If you are continuing on after Fraser, we will swap you back into your original vehicle. Note that all swaps are performed at Brisbane airport. Tip: This is a great opportunity to visit local favorite destinations of Noosa North Shore and Double Island point enroute to Fraser. Ask us for more information about this.​
Hilux Outback
Unfortunately we can't remove and refit the roof top tents on Hilux Outback and therefore this 4WD is not permitted to travel to Fraser Island. However if you book Hilux Outback and Fraser Island forms part of your longer itinerary, we can arrange to swap you into an alternative vehicle (subject to availability) for your time at Fraser and then swap you back into the Outback for the duration of your trip if you are continuing on. (For example, we would swap you into a Hilux Adventure with ground tents). All vehicle swaps are performed at Brisbane Airport.
